ASL Home – A Haven for Organic Learning One day we dream to have a space called an ASL Home to be a haven for learning American Sign Language organically. We want to see Deaf kiddos and their families from around the world come and feel empowered to learn their natural language! The vision is to teach ASL in the same setting as the family lives – a home. Doing life together in the same setting while playing, cooking, reading books, cleaning, eating, getting dressed, sleeping, everyday life, all in ASL. Families would come to the ASL Home during the day and go back to their homes to practice what they learned. A child with normal hearing has a vocabulary of 900 – 1,000 words by the age of three, while the adopted Deaf child has a very limited vocabulary, if any at all. It is a critical time for Deaf children to begin learning ASL to build the foundations for their emotional, social and behavioral development as they are learning to trust and form attachments in their new families. Learn more about this initiative » Interpreter Fund Deaf couples desiring to adopt internationally – from time to time – require the services of qualified ASL interpreters while in-country to facilitate communication with adoption officials, orphanage staff, transportation issues, etc. The Signs for Hope Interpreter Fund was created for receiving monetary gifts that will go directly to defray transportation costs, hotel fees, and other expenses incurred by the ASL interpreter traveling with the Deaf couple who is adopting. The ASL interpreter donates their time and skill for this travel. Rader Family Adoption Fund The Rader Family is welcoming a young boy from India, who has severe to profound hearing loss in both ears, into their family. Marc & Angela Russell We are the Russell family and joined the Signs for Hope team full-time in January 2022. We are serving with Signs for Hope in Asheville, NC as missionaries. Marc serves as the Information Technology Director while Angela serves as the Training and Curriculum Development Director. We have 4 children ages 19, 16, 14, and 11. Our youngest, Noel, is profoundly deaf. SFH Family Retreat Signs for Hope’s annual ASL-Immersion Family Retreat was created for families who have adopted Deaf children and are wanting to improve their ASL receptive and expressive skills. Deaf staff members and ASL-fluent staff members help to create an ASL-rich environment during our family retreat.
